DENSO Wireless entered the CDMA handset market in about 1999. They started with a team of 20 people in Carlsbad, CA, and needed to expand this team in a very short period of time in order to compete. They engaged Williams & Sewell HR Consulting as a strategic partner in 1999 to manage their entire staffing effort. We developed their strategies (with budget), established their staffing processes, and executed all of the recruitment. We provided a complete team of on-site recruiters, including a team lead. In 3 years they grew the site to over 250 employees, primarily recruiting highly sought-after technical personnel. They accomplished this despite the fact that DENSO Wireless did not have stock options and were competing for engineers against San Diego CDMA companies such as Qualcomm, Motorola and Nokia.

Companies with sporadic or cyclical hiring needs often default to the use of search firms in times of hiring peaks, when they do not have the internal resources available to recruit. To fill single openings a fee of 20 - 30% of the annual salary offered to the candidate can be a reasonable expense. However, in multiple hiring situations the use of agencies can be very expensive. Search firms will push their own candidate to be hired, rather than the best candidate for the client, as this is how they are paid. To protect their interest, they are most likely presenting the same candidate to competing companies. Sierra Wireless modems and software connect people and systems to mobile broadband networks around the world. They have a diverse product portfolio addressing enterprise, consumer, OEM, M2M and specialized markets, as well as professional services in wireless design, integration and carrier certification. Sierra Wireless’ headquarters are in Richmond, BC, with major facilities in Carlsbad, CA, and Newark, CA. They have had steady growth since 2004, with peaks and valleys of technical hiring. Being a mid-sized company with up & down staffing needs, they did not want to invest in a full-time employee dedicated solely to recruiting.
